MANHATTAN, Kan. – CMG and K-State alumni Tim Schrag ’12 and Lindsay Porter ’04, ’07 will take over advising duties for Manhappenin’ Magazine and Royal Purple yearbook starting this month for the 2026-27 school year.
Schrag served as the three-time editor-in-chief of the Kansas State Collegian while at K-State and recently held the role of interim director for Collegian Media Group during the 2024-25 school year. During his interim year, Schrag led the Collegian team to a 2nd place finish nationally for “Best Newspaper” with the College Media Association.
With a decade of experience of creating the K-Stater Magazine, Schrag appreciates the people he’s worked with along his journey that have played a part in his mentality of creating the alumni magazine for K-State.
“Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to work with a very talented group of editors, writers, and other professionals who have influenced my style and community-centered approach to publications,” Schrag said.
In addition to his role as adviser to the Manhappenin’, Schrag will continue in his role as senior editor of the K-Stater for the K-State Alumni Association.
Porter held numerous positions with the Royal Purple yearbook from 2000-2006, helping the team win six ACP Pacemakers along the way. She also worked in the business office and routinely helped with the Flint Hills Publications Workshop each summer in Kedzie Hall.
From building communication strategies, redesigning publications and leading large-scale projects, Porter believes her professional experiences will translate to the Royal Purple staff and publication.
“The biggest influence of my overall experiences is that no matter the location, staff size, budget and other resources, a team of talented, passionate and dedicated people can accomplish any goal — journalists and college students tend to be that type of people more consistently than not,”Porter said. “I am excited to be back on campus in the creative environment of the yearbook office to help shape the people, ideas and publications that will emerge.”
Director Spencer O’Daniel is ecstatic to have Porter and Schrag join the CMG professional team and looks forward to what they can offer the staffers of both publications.
“To me, this is about as good as it can get for hiring the most qualified and passionate individuals locally for both of these publications,” O’Daniel said. “Our goal from the beginning of the job search was to find two individuals with a wealth of knowledge for each respective publication and a deep passion for helping students take their work to the next level. This is an exciting time for CMG, for sure.”
Bringing Schrag back in an adviser role for CMG stems largely from the enjoyment he experienced working with The Collegian team during his interim year.
“Collegian Media Group had a tremendous impact on my career trajectory. Lessons I learned in Kedzie Hall are still applicable today,” Schrag said. “Having had the opportunity to serve as the adviser to the Kansas State Collegian in the 2024-25 school year gave me a spark for passing along my knowledge to the next generation.”
Even after 20 years since serving as the Royal Purple editor-in-chief in 2006, Porter still knows and appreciates the role the Royal Purple plays connecting all Wildcats to the history of that respective year.
“A yearbook is one year in life — the life of the university, the life of the staffers. I look forward to seeing how this year impacts the students involved. How the theme transforms into a yearbook and how the students grow as a staff,” Porter said. “My RP years are full of great memories and influential life moments. I’m excited to be a part of this life-defining, memory-making year for the students involved.”
