A message from the director…
Thank you for visiting The Collegian Media Group!
Whether you’re an alum who has worked for CMG, a proud parent of a current student, a print or online reader of CMG’s content, we appreciate your support.
The Collegian newspaper, Royal Purple yearbook and Manhappenin’ magazine are reported, edited and produced entirely by students.
As CMG’s director, I’m thrilled to announce a new project to bring CMG into the Twenty-First Century.
In 2022, the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication vacated Kedzie Hall. Earlier this year, K-State’s Division of Space Management approved CMG moving into these spaces that would add 1,068 square feet to CMG’s footprint. CMG will finally have a State-of-the-Art converged newsroom for all its multimedia publications consisting of:
- its own video studio
- its own video editing and podcast suite
- an audio/video check-out cage
- a new photo studio
- shared conference space
- a news gathering space for the KSDB-FM news team.
- a State news desk
Cost: $1,000,000
Why do this?
For starters, I want to make certain I can offer our current and future students experiential learning opportunities that will prepare them for careers in ways modern-day HR recruiters expect, just as CMG did for thousands of alumni who came before them. The project:
- responds to the immediate need of our democracy: An independent free press that can hold truth to power in a changing political landscape. It’s young journalists today who will meet that need; and, at Collegian Media Group we’re working to provide students with the facilities that will teach them to get the job done here, and after they graduate.
- brings CMG’s students’ experiential learning into alignment with the university’s Next-Gen K-State initiative and vision that elevates job-readiness for the next 25 years. It also serves as an entry point for high school students interested in print and digital media production.
- provides students with the facilities they need to gather and report the news for filling the growing number of news deserts across Kansas.
Our shared legacy
All of CMG’s alumni have created this moment. Together, our students’ collective talents have built a legacy of award-winning storytelling. They’ve also sealed a history of fond memories with their signatures on The Collegian’s infamous newsroom ceiling. I intend to preserve that history and bring it with us into CMG’s future.
To our alumni: Your national Pacemaker awards, the thousands of individual awards, and the nearly 100 years of serving Kansas State and the local community – you might not have all been here at the same time, but you all all did it together. Help me to continue that tradition of service.
Goal
Join me in raising $1,000,000 to bring CMG’s facilities into the Twenty-First Century. We can do it! We’re “K-State Strong!”
With My Gratitude,
