About This Role: The A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Collegian Media Group(CMG) are seeking to fill a cooperative position of an Director of Collegian Media Group / Instructor. This position is a full time, benefits eligible, 12 month appointment. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1st, 2020. An example some of the duties this position will be responsible for are below:

  • Teach a three course load in Journalism and Mass Communications related to reporting, media design, and data visualization.
  • Serve as adviser CMG publications, including the Collegian and companion publications. Participate in planning sessions, provide feedback for student leaders, encouraging creativity and promoting successful risk-taking.
  • Support journalistic endeavors to create student journalistic opportunity, helping grow, guide, correct and nurture the next generation of journalists.
  • Serve as administrator of the CMG corporation, including
    • Execute the directions of the CMG board of directors and successfully implement changes.
    • Keeping board aware of non-profit’s achievements and weaknesses.
    • Acting on committees for the board, including financial and fundraising.
    • Preparing financial and managerial documents while planning monthly board meetings.
  • Act as manager of the daily operations of the CMG, including:
    • Oversee day-to-day activities of the nonprofit; hire and supervise the permanent staff reporting to the director.
    • Act as CMG treasurer
    • Supervise CMG employees
    • Interface with vendors
    • Prepare yearly budget, track charges and be responsible for the bottom line.

What You’ll Need to Succeed: Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Excellent journalistic writing and copy-editing skills
  • Experience in leading a staff publishing on multi-platforms on a regular (multiple times per week) basis.
  • Experience in teaching writing, media design or data visualization.
  • Master’s degree in journalism or relevant field.
  • Understanding and commitment to the First Amendment and a school journalist’s rights.
  • Adherence to journalistic standards as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of industry experience.
  • Publishing experience on multiple platforms.
  • Fluent in social media platforms.

Collegian Media Group brings home multiple national awards

Students from Kansas State University’s Collegian Media Group brought home 12 national awards from the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association convention in Washington, D.C. last week.

But the convention was about more than winning awards. More than 100 instructional sessions filled the program.

“There were so many sessions from professional journalists to choose from that it was easy to find ideas to bring home,” Kaylie McLaughlin, 2019 Collegian editor said, “ but the most beneficial thing for me was talking with students from other campuses about their publications. I have so many ideas to share with the Collegian staff.”

The 2018 Royal Purple yearbook was one of three in the nation to be named a Pacemaker, the highest award given by ACP, which also recognized the 2019 Royal Purple with third place in Best of  Show competition.

CMA recognized the Royal Purple with a second place in Yearbook of the Year competition.

The Royal Purple staff also received:

Ashley Read, 2020 Royal Purple editor-in-chief, accepts multiple CMA awards at the National College Media Convention.

The Manhappenin’ Magazine staff was recognized with the Best Magazine Sports Spread.

“Bringing back so many awards just validates what we are doing with the RP,” Ashley Read, 2020 Royal Purple editor said. “It proves we are doing good work and it motivates us to do more to make this year’s book even better for the student body and to win more awards next year.”

Manhappenin’ and Collegian staffers place in competitive Mark of Excellence Contest through Society of Professional Journalists

The Collegian Media Group recently competed in the 2019 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence contest. This regional contest pits us against seven other states in a highly competitive regional that includes Wichita State, Drake, University of Kansas, Missouri and the University of Iowa.

A total of three of our 11 entries placed:

These four students are now finalists and winners will be announced in mid-April at the SPJ Region 7 Conference in Ames, Iowa.

Assistant Director & Publications Adviser

Collegian Media Group seeks an energetic and experienced student media professional to serve as assistant director and to guide a staff of university students in creating, editing and promoting the Royal Purple, the nation’s most-decorated yearbook, as well as advising the staff of a new lifestyle magazine, Manhappenin’, at Kansas State University.

The Role

As the Royal Purple adviser, the successful candidate will oversee the student staff who create, edit and promote the yearbook, lending his or her experience to the editors as a coach and guide. Founded in 1909, the Royal Purple consistently wins national honors for its content.

As the Manhappenin’ adviser, the successful candidate will oversee the student staff who create our new semi-annual magazine that covers lifestyle, culture and fashion in and around Manhattan. The publication recently placed first in the Kansas Press Association best magazine in 2019.

As the assistant director, the candidate will direct the Flint Hills Publications Workshop, a summer high school journalism camp, manage a staff of IT support students, and advise the student photographers for the publications. The assistant director will also serve as a liaison for the Kansas Scholastic Press Association and high school events at Kansas State.

The ideal candidate will have online publishing and/or journalism skills that she or he can share with the staff of the Collegian, the daily student newspaper. He or she will also share in duties of budgeting and reaching the corporate goals set by the board of directors.

This is a twelve-month job with the potential for flexible work hours. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a suite of health insurance, dental insurance, a 403(b) retirement fund, and life insurance.

As an extracurricular activity, our publications have a student staff who come from across the K-State campus. In addition to the large group enrolled in the A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, we also have writers from the College of Human Ecology, advertising staff from the College of Business Administration and technology staff from the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.

The company
In addition to the Royal Purple and Manhappenin’, Collegian Media Group publishes the Collegian, a daily news source, and hosts the annual Flint Hills Publications Workshop. The Collegian regularly wins state and regional awards, and was founded in 1896. The business was incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 1946 and received non-profit status the following year. It is governed by a board of directors and is independent of Kansas State University.

Qualifications
•Required: Bachelor’s degree; previous experience with student media, preferably with a yearbook; thorough understanding of creating and managing web sites.
• Desired: Master’s degree; knowledge of digital and mobile applications for publication use. Experience with advising or teaching students. Familiarity with budgeting and Macs. Attends nightly staff meetings 2-3 times per week.

In December 2018, the winners for the Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence contest were announced. In the fall of 2017, the Collegian Media Group placed five total entries in the contest in our first year competing. Most notably, we were the only collegiate student publications group in Kansas to enter journalism work against professional writers, designers and photographers from around the state.

For this year’s contest, we were fortunate enough to have 10 total entries place in this highly competitive contest. This affirms that our Collegian Media Group staffers are creating, writing and shooting at an industry standard level.

CMG creative staffer takes home first place for display ad, Manhappenin’ magazine and Royal Purple score national placings

On October 24, 2018, two staffers from the Collegian Media Group and Collegian Media Group assistant director Spencer O’Daniel traveled to Louisville for the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention.

Please congratulate the following students and student publications for their accomplishments at this conference. Noteworthy mentions include our first-ever individual 1st place entry for creative team member Acacia Thalmann, and Manhappenin’ magazine snagging a 3rd place finish in best college magazine in their 1st year of competition. The Royal Purple yearbook was also named was one of the best three yearbooks in the country.

Royal Purple editor, Manhappenin’ magazine and CMG creative team score big, named finalists for the CMA Pinnacle Awards

Please congratulate the following Collegian Media Group staffers and Manhappenin’ magazine who were named national finalists in the 2018 CMA Pinnacle Awards.

Winners will be announced at the CMA/ACP National College Media Convention in Louisville, KY on October 28, 2018.

Nevins was a four-year member of the Royal Purple yearbook, and served as co-editor for the 2017 and 2018 Royal Purple. Allie Deiter and Acacia Thalmann are creative designers for the Collegian newspaper and Manhappenin’ magazine. Additionally, Manhappenin’ magazine was named one of four finalists for the best student created magazine in the country.
