CMG seeks full-time advertising adviser

The Collegian Media Group at Kansas State University seeks a fulltime, 40-hour per week, advertising adviser to lead a student staff to sell print and digital ads for the K-State Collegian, Manhappenin’ magazine and other promotional guides.

The Board of Directors hires a student ad manager. He or she hires and supervises the sales staff. The advertising adviser works directly with the ad manager to select staff, set sales goals, coach the staff and provide training throughout the semester.

The advertising adviser is responsible for guiding students to be successful in sales, managing national advertising accounts, resolving client disputes and working collaboratively with a team. The advertising adviser is responsible for meeting revenue requirements as determined by the CMG director and approved by the Board of Directors.


The adviser’s role is to oversee the decisions, tasks, responsibilities and job placement of student employees within the department and provide guidance on all things advertising related including conflicts with clients and billing. The advertising adviser must be comfortable with new media and excited about the possibilities of providing digital and print advertising bundles to clients.


  • Train, direct and guide the advertising management, sales and creative teams.
  • Work with student ad managers to develop advertising campaigns.
  • Help set goals and monitor progress.
  • Sell national advertising and maintain accounts.
  • Develop annual sales projections for the organization.
  • Manage billing payment collection and invoicing monthly.
  • Collaborate with CMG staff and other departments to develop and monitor long-term revenue solutions.
  • Track sales volume and traffic within the department.
  • Through weekly meetings with sales staff, ensure client accounts are being handled efficiently and professionally.
  • Recruit potential ad staff and oversee the hiring of sales reps and creatives. 
  • Assist students in marketing all CMG publications and platforms.
  • Other duties assigned by the director.

QUALIFICATIONS: Four-year degree, three years’ advertising and digital media experience, two years of managing or training salespeople, understanding of print and digital media sales.

Desired: familiarity with collegiate student media. Knowledge of digital, mobile, tablet and app development. Experience with the agency model.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

About This Role: The A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Collegian Media Group(CMG) are seeking to fill a cooperative position of an Director of Collegian Media Group / Instructor. This position is a full time, benefits eligible, 12 month appointment. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1st, 2020. An example some of the duties this position will be responsible for are below:

  • Teach a three course load in Journalism and Mass Communications related to reporting, media design, and data visualization.
  • Serve as adviser CMG publications, including the Collegian and companion publications. Participate in planning sessions, provide feedback for student leaders, encouraging creativity and promoting successful risk-taking.
  • Support journalistic endeavors to create student journalistic opportunity, helping grow, guide, correct and nurture the next generation of journalists.
  • Serve as administrator of the CMG corporation, including
    • Execute the directions of the CMG board of directors and successfully implement changes.
    • Keeping board aware of non-profit’s achievements and weaknesses.
    • Acting on committees for the board, including financial and fundraising.
    • Preparing financial and managerial documents while planning monthly board meetings.
  • Act as manager of the daily operations of the CMG, including:
    • Oversee day-to-day activities of the nonprofit; hire and supervise the permanent staff reporting to the director.
    • Act as CMG treasurer
    • Supervise CMG employees
    • Interface with vendors
    • Prepare yearly budget, track charges and be responsible for the bottom line.

What You’ll Need to Succeed: Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Excellent journalistic writing and copy-editing skills
  • Experience in leading a staff publishing on multi-platforms on a regular (multiple times per week) basis.
  • Experience in teaching writing, media design or data visualization.
  • Master’s degree in journalism or relevant field.
  • Understanding and commitment to the First Amendment and a school journalist’s rights.
  • Adherence to journalistic standards as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of industry experience.
  • Publishing experience on multiple platforms.
  • Fluent in social media platforms.

Seeking Collegian carrier for 2018/2019 school year

The Collegian is hiring a permanent carrier to deliver papers across campus and Manhattan. A car and a safe driving record are required, along with availability between 5 and 10 a.m. in the summer and between 6 and 8 a.m. in the fall and spring.

In the summer the carrier picks up from Salina and delivers 5,000 copies to about 40 locations. The summer pay is $150 per week, which covers mileage to Salina.

In the fall and spring semesters, the papers are delivered to campus for distribution on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The carrier covers one of five routes, with about 40 locations. The pay is $20 per day.

This job comes with the opportunity to advance to head carrier, which includes supervisory responsibility, earning $40 per delivery day during the fall and spring. The job requires a responsible person who can work reliably without direct oversight.
