Now Accepting Applications for 2020-2021 Staff Positions

Collegian Media Group is now accepting applications for staff positions for the 2020-2021 academic school year. Our organization is one of the largest student employers on campus; annually we hire over 150 students to contribute to several publications, advertising team, and other student positions in our organizations.

The following leadership positions are open for application:

  • Advertising account executive
  • Writers for all publications
  • Designers for all publications
  • Photographers for all publications

 The editors of The Collegian newspaper, Manhappenin’ Magazine, and the Royal Purple yearbook collect staff applications, coordinate interviews, define positions and duties, and hire all positions. 

Interested applicants should fill out the Student Position Application on our website or the K-State Handshake job board. Applications should include a resume, cover letter, and examples of journalism experience.

About This Role: The A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Collegian Media Group(CMG) are seeking to fill a cooperative position of an Director of Collegian Media Group / Instructor. This position is a full time, benefits eligible, 12 month appointment. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1st, 2020. An example some of the duties this position will be responsible for are below:

  • Teach a three course load in Journalism and Mass Communications related to reporting, media design, and data visualization.
  • Serve as adviser CMG publications, including the Collegian and companion publications. Participate in planning sessions, provide feedback for student leaders, encouraging creativity and promoting successful risk-taking.
  • Support journalistic endeavors to create student journalistic opportunity, helping grow, guide, correct and nurture the next generation of journalists.
  • Serve as administrator of the CMG corporation, including
    • Execute the directions of the CMG board of directors and successfully implement changes.
    • Keeping board aware of non-profit’s achievements and weaknesses.
    • Acting on committees for the board, including financial and fundraising.
    • Preparing financial and managerial documents while planning monthly board meetings.
  • Act as manager of the daily operations of the CMG, including:
    • Oversee day-to-day activities of the nonprofit; hire and supervise the permanent staff reporting to the director.
    • Act as CMG treasurer
    • Supervise CMG employees
    • Interface with vendors
    • Prepare yearly budget, track charges and be responsible for the bottom line.

What You’ll Need to Succeed: Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Excellent journalistic writing and copy-editing skills
  • Experience in leading a staff publishing on multi-platforms on a regular (multiple times per week) basis.
  • Experience in teaching writing, media design or data visualization.
  • Master’s degree in journalism or relevant field.
  • Understanding and commitment to the First Amendment and a school journalist’s rights.
  • Adherence to journalistic standards as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of industry experience.
  • Publishing experience on multiple platforms.
  • Fluent in social media platforms.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
